Default How to setup X1 : Helpful tips and advice

Hi. I'm picking up my new X1 tomorrow at CPW. Generic hanset, but I will be with O2. A bit costly but due to the advise from this site about the disadvantages of getting a handset that is branded to a particular network, I choose to get an unbranded/generic/unlocked one instead from CPW.

I would like to solicit helpful tips and advise on how to setup the Xperia, specially with O2. I have a Symbian N95 at the moment. The X1 will be my first WinMo device. I'm really not an Apple/Blackberry type of bloke, and I didn't think the G1 Android is fully developed yet.

Please give me some tips/advise about the X1, especially on how to make it more efficient, and avoid the reported slowdowns and bugs.

    Many thanks.

My #1 tip would be "be patient with it"

This applies to everything. WM is not as responsive as a normal phone OS. It is a PDA first and formost (IMHO). So sometimes it might take a second or something for a screen to load. This is usually only when you have several applications running, and I have to say that so far I've found the X1 quite good at actually closing the application, instead of just running it in the background.

There are options on the O2 website, and quite possibly within the phone (I think) for getting all the carrier settings set up automatically.

Must have applications...pretty much most of the things mentioned frequently on this site Namely xperia tweak and the SPB Shell. These are a great starting point that make the phone much more usable out of the box. Xperia tweak will allow you to change some of the minor things you might not like, such as some of the notifications. SPB Shell just seems much more intuitive and user friendly than the supplied panels.

Other than that, the beauty of WM is that it is so flexible in what you want to do with the device, be it games, office work, sat nav etc. Another useful tool for once you have the X1 set up, and are exploring the apps, is any kind of backup tool. I use SPB Backup. This way you can make a total backup of everything to your card, and in the worst case scenario, if after adding something and your phone no longer works properly, do a hard reset and restore!

Oh, and when calibrating the screen (tapping in diff corners) make sure you do it lightly. It is as sensitive to pressure as it is to your accuracy, and so light taps will make it much more responsive than pressing very hard.
