The X2? Probably not…

Were not quite sure what to make of the video above, which could be a future Sony Ericsson mobile. While it is rumored this could be the X1 successor, the phone instead resembles more of a PSP (possibly the PSP phone?). This is something we haven’t yet seen from Sony; and it also lacks the keyboard we are seeing in the X1. We can also see the icon set that is similar to the Playstation/PSP, while no apparent use the ‘panels’ interface common the initial Xperia. Details are scarce, however I think it’s no secret the X1 will be just the first of many for the Xperia line.

My guess is this is simply a prototype, and that of an old rendition of the P5i or the X1. The PSP is getting older, and a PSP phone would be a great way to keep a dying gaming handset alive.

Xperia X1 white papers

In March Sony Ericsson released the white paper for the Xperia X1. Most of you are already drooling at the mouth over the aesthetics and features of the Xperia X1 handset, wait until you see some of these awesome features. Here are just a few that particularly sparked my interest:

  •  DNLA compatible. This was music to my ears, due to recently problems I had connecting my ps3 and various network drives. DNLA is a sharing standard, it will allow you to share content with other DNLA certified devices, such as the ps3 and xbox.
  • Video recording at an impressive 30fps MPEG-4. VGA only.
  • Xperia X1 will come pre-loaded with Google maps and Java mobile as well as a whole feast of email features such as Push email and setup wizards for popular clients such as gmail and yahoo.
  • Pre-loaded Xperia panels (view video)

So I think you'll agree, this handset is looking more and more appetising. I'll definitely have my name down on the pre-order list.

Xperia X1 Release Date?

Xperia X1 Release DateHandango, a popular mobile content distributor, appears to have leaked the infamous Xperia X1 release date. In what appears to be an email aimed at developers, Handango proclaimed the X1 will launch in mid-September; and will also be utilizing their In-Hand service. In case you aren’t familiar with this type of service, Handango basically allows you to manage your downloading, installing, and purchasing directly from your mobile –without the need for a pc. What’s more exciting is that the rumors of the 2009 launch can be trashed, and that we should see this magnum opus from Sony at the end of Q3 2008. As for the price? My guess is at $899 USD, and that is without any form of subscriber/contract deal. If you are feeling a bit adventurous, Mobile City Online is taking pre-orders at $999; however they claim no ETA on when the phone might arrive.
