Aussies left out of 'global' Xperia X1 release - News - PDA-phones

Sony Ericsson has announced its global release schedule for the highly anticipated Xperia X1 smartphone, beginning with the UK, Germany and Switzerland on 30 September, but Australia will not see the X1 until at least three months later.

The statement from Sony Ericsson indicates that the X1 will also be released in selected Asia Pacific countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan, shortly after in the fourth quarter of 2008. Australians will not see a local release of the phone until the first quarter of 2009.

A spokesperson for Sony Ericsson said that the Q1 release schedule for Australia was in line with the company's original expectations, but could not comment on why Australia would have to wait.

The Xperia X1 is Sony Ericsson's first attempt at manufacturing a business-focused mobile phone running Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. Early details of the phone's specifications suggested a full-featured smartphone to rival the likes of established smartphone brands like BlackBerry and HTC's Touch series. The X1 also features a high resolution touchscreen colour display similar to Apple's iPhone 3G.

My suggestion is to find someone you know overseas to buy it, then open it and post it as a second hand device to avoid tax, etc..

I read in a newspaper in my country Indonesia today 24 September that Xperia is ready in the shops in October 2008.Thanks Godnes the long long waiting is nearly over.But what about this forum if we all have it? Is this forum close or continue to change information about this smartphone.

What are the frequencies in Australia? are they different from the UK or US?

Our frequency is the same as UK. Though UK has a 14.4Mb HSDPA and outs kicks to 7.7Mb at the end of the year.
I dont get it, I just do and hand stand and type :P

In that case then I'm not sure why you guys are going to be waiting so long, could it be that you are a very small market for SE?

I imagine someone somewhere has done a mobile phone density research, (number of mobile phone users per thousand, population count, potential target users etc) and maybe aus isn't a massivly viable market place? so they are testing it out in the UK, germany and sweden, large roll out in the states etc and then coming to you guys for full global domination?

Could be something as simple as the heat and light issues of australia and the battery life/ screen visability.

I really dont know... just making stuff up as I go along

Australia follows the asian pacific region, we usually get SE products early but for some reason and it's always with SE business phones we have to wait longer.

I will order mine overseas though.
