IV. Fast and Stable Custom "cooked" ROM
V. X1 ROM optimization with Kovsky Kitchen
VI. Making a Cab (installer) File

I. How To HardSPL

Instructions to flash Hard-SPL:

it's recommended you run the basic package, and don't flash the other attachment (MFG SPL - it is only for hackers).

0a) make sure you have .NET framework installed on your PC! if not, get it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
0b) if you have vista, WMDC update is recommended: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...ce-center.mspx
1) download Hard-SPL package from attachment, extract to an empty folder.
2) it is recommended you download only the X1_HardSPL_v1.zip unless you want to tinker with MFG SPL (MFG SPL 0.52 is a separate attachment).
3) you must Have Phone Synced with PC in Windows Mobile!
4) run X1_HardSPL.exe. (if you want to flash MFG SPL: at this point replace the extracted RUU_Signed.nbh with the MFG version of RUU_Signed.nbh)
5) follow steps in the RUU, and check on the device for prompts after PC shows loading bar.
6) it should go to tricolour screen now and say 0.52.OliNex.MFG (this is SSPL!).
7) Hard-SPL flashes, device automatically reboots, job done.
8 ) to confirm you got it installed, go into bootloader mode (tricolour screen!) and verify the screen shows 0.72.OliNex (or 0.52.OliNex MFG).

NOTE: you will not see the SPL version during normal boot, that is the OS version, not SPL!
to enter bootloader mode to see version: with the device turned OFF, press and hold the volume down button along with the power button, then release the power button, and finally release volume down button when bootloader tricolour screen appears.

NOTE 2: anyone having problems with the device entering SSPL automatically(your device doesn't go to tricolour screen), please copy Xperia-SSPL-Manual.exe from the Xperia-SSPL-Manual.zip attachment to the device and run it. then once the screen is in SSPL (tricolour screen saying 0.52.OliNex), run RUU on the PC (i.e. the rest of the hardspl package) manually.

NOTE 3: this is unsigned Hard-SPL. also, this has overwrite protection, if someone needs to revert to stock SPL for warranty reasons, a stock SPL downgrade package is also available here - scroll down!

NOTE 4: do not use this RUU to flash anything else! this is only intended for flashing the Hard-SPL. use Xperia CustomRUU to flash other ROM images. for example this version: RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

***

IMPORTANT: extra Xperia-specific notes: the prerelease roms out there in the X1 ROMs thread are not going to flash on retail devices because the radios they include are only flashable on prerelease devices ("Security unlocked" message in SPL can be seen on these). so what you need to do is repack the NBH without the radio - this will only work with Hard-SPL though, as repacking breaks the HTC sign on the NBH file.
I had a tester upload a repackaged UK image, which will flash fine. you can find it in the x1 roms thread. =)

***

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS:

- read the instructions.
- read the instructions.
- read the instructions.
- if you get connection error in RUU after the device goes to tricolour screen, then try a different USB port, also do not use USB hub, you can also try rebooting your PC, and can try using another PC. read the thread for even more tips that I don't remember now. also you can try unticking advanced network functionality in start menu / settings / connections / usbtopc applet.
- if hardspl EXE won't run, and you are on vista, try to right click it and use "run as Administrator" option
- if SSPL-Manual.exe or enterbootloader.exe fails to run (says missing component or similar), try a hard reset of the device.

***

Extra How to: How to Restore Stock SPL for warranty reasons.

step by step:
- this is ONLY for warranty reasons. i.e. the device needs repair and you have to send it to htc to get it serviced. if you plan to restore hardspl then don't even bother flashing this stock package, unless you are some kind of hacker/dev
- IMPORTANT: be sure to first restore stock OS, and stock radio. stock SPL is always to be done last!!
- now the steps
1. download the stock spl package from this post.
2. download X1_HardSPL_v1 too, from this post.
3. run the hardspl package, but do not press Next button i.e do not go ahead with flash yet.
4. at this point, take the extracted stock SPL, a RUU_Signed.NBH file, and overwrite the other RUU_Signed.NBH in hardspl package.
5. go on with the RUU (or if needed, run SSPL-Manual.exe manually, then run RUU when it goes to tricolour screen with 0.52.OliNex version), it goes to 100%, reboots, done.
+1. to verify, enter bootloader (see description above in this post), and check version number on tricolour screen. it should say 0.72.0000.

Download:
X1_HardSPL_v1.zip
Xperia-SSPL-Manual.zip
only_to_experiment_MFG_HardSPL_052.zip
ruusigned_072stockspl.zip

II. Flashing ROM

Micro SD Method: The Safest and Easiest Method (to be done only after hardspl)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is useful if you load a bad image and cannot make an activesync connection for RUU flashing method.
This method works for any 6.1 and 6.5, and even radio rom.

*** Some Kingston brand may have problem to use SD method, no solution other than use RUU method ***

0. Make sure x1 is hard-spl first
1. Make sure your micro-sd is formatted w/ fat-32
2. rename the image file (normally "ruu_signed.nbh") to Kovsimg.nbh, copy that to the micro-sd, and put that it your X1,
onto the storage card root
3. Make sure X1 is disconnect to your PC to avoid goes to serial mode (AC power source is OK)
4. Bring x1 to boot-loader mode by turning off the x1 completely. Hold the "volume down" button on the right,
and hold the power on button until you see the tri-color screen.
5. Then follow the on-screen instruction

V. X1 ROM optimization with Kovsky Kitchen
Originally posted by htainlin at the XDA

Preparation:

1. Download Kovsky Kitchen
2. Download X1i_GENERIC_UK_R3AA010 or any prefered Stock ROM

Start Cooking your own ROM:

Step 1: Preparation

1. Extract Kovsky Kitchen to any where you want. (Preferrably C:\Kovsky Kitchen)
2. Rename APP_SW_X1i_GENERIC_UK_KOV_R3AA010.image to RUU_Signed.nbh and copy to Kovsky kitchen's BaseRom folder.

Step 2: Extracting

1. Run KovskyKitchen.CMD
2. Type "e" to extract the original X1 R3AA010 rom
3. Type "a" to start extracting. (It will take around 2 or 3 minutes)
4. Wait until you see "Press Any Key to continue...."
5. Leave the CMD windows open...

Now Kovsky Kitchen is ready to cook...

Step 3: Cooking

1. Go to a newly created folder called " OEM" in the kitchen that where you do stripping out SE's Junks.
2. Go to "ConfigAP" folder. You will see config_AP.txt. Make file writable by changing read only attribute. And delete all links to CAB files that you want to delete. I delete them all as I don't want any of them.

CAB: \WINDOWS\bejeweled2SX1.PPC_2577.WM5_signed.CAB
CAB: \WINDOWS\FM-Radio_Panel_MR1_R19_32318_signed.CAB
CAB: \WINDOWS\GoogleMaps-ms-sonyericsson_emb.cab
CAB: \WINDOWS\GooglePanel_UK_MR1_R19_32195_signed.CAB
CAB: \WINDOWS\GoogleSearch_SEMC_1.1.40_RC3_signed.CAB
CAB: \WINDOWS\MxP_R19_MR1_RC2_32367_signed.CAB
CAB: \WINDOWS\WM6.1_PPC_dawn_Opera_2532_signed.cab
CAB: \WINDOWS\sudokuSX1.PPC_2577.WM5.CAB

Leave only "CFG: \WINDOWS\config_end.txt" line . I don't want any junk in the rom. I will install them later by UC config or manually install them.

And put the file back "Read Only"

3. Delete folders that you don't want in the OEM folder whatever start with "PACKAGE_". For example:

PACKAGE_Kovsky_Bejeweled2
PACKAGE_Kovsky_Bejeweled2_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_FMRadioPanel
PACKAGE_Kovsky_FMRadioPanel_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_GoogleMap
PACKAGE_Kovsky_GoogleMap_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_Googlepanel
PACKAGE_Kovsky_Googlepanel_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_GoogleSearch
PACKAGE_Kovsky_GoogleSearch_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_HandangoInHand
PACKAGE_Kovsky_HandangoInHand_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_MxP
PACKAGE_Kovsky_MxP_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_Opera_Browser
PACKAGE_Kovsky_Opera_Browser_0409
PACKAGE_Kovsky_Sudoku
PACKAGE_Kovsky_Sudoku_0409

4. Deleting files from ExtendedPkg (Musics and Movies)

Make config.txt writable and delete
"XML: \WINDOWS\fileoperations.xml" line and Make the file read only again.
Delete all files that are larger than 22 KB except "Xperia Black.tsk", because i like Xperia black theme.

You can delete other files if you want to but for me I leave them alone as they are small enough.

5. Deleting files from SYS folder (These are original WM stuffs)

Delete "AUTOUPDATE" folder
Delete "NetCF" folder (You can install NetCF 3.0 later)
Delete "SampleMusic" folder
Delete "WelcomeCenter" folder
Delete "WelcomeCenter_Lang_0409" folder

You can delete OneNote, Office, or WindowsLive if you would like to. But I leave them alone.

Now.. our rom has no more unwanted stuffs..

Step 4: Building OS

1. Go back to CMD window and
2. Type "C" cook a rom.
3. Type "A" if you want to use the old BuildOS.exe (I can't figure out the second one)
4. BuildOS windows will appear.
5. Just click on green "Play" icon and It will start building our rom. Wait until it finishs and closes the "Build OS" window.
6. Go back to CMD windows again and wait until you see "press any key to contine".. press any key..
7. It will do some stuffs and you will see os-new.nb in the kitchen folder.
8. htc rom tool windows will appear.
Go to Rom Builder TAB. Choose Kovsky * in device. It will fill all the infomation in other fields. Just change the version to anything you like.
9. Choose "os-new.nb" in the OS field. and click on "Build" button.
10. Save it as "RUU_Signed.nbh" in the kitchen folder. A new window appear and it will quit itself.
11. Now. you will see "RUU_Signed.nbh" in the kitchen folder.
12. An Hexa Editor windows will appear. Just close it.
13. You can close CMD window now.

Step 5: Flashing

Now you are ready to flash your own cooked rom. You can flash your rom with RUU Update Utility or just change "RUU_Signed.nbh" to "KOVSIMG.nbh" and put is in SD card and flash it.

For information on how to flash using SD card here .

You can get my sample rom here.

************************************************** ************************************************** *****************
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO PUT CAB FILES IN THE ROM.
************************************************** ************************************************** *****************

Step1:

Put the line in Config_AP.txt the line "CAB: \WINDOWS\FM-Radio_Panel_MR1_R19_32318_signed.CAB" . It has to be exactly as the cab file name that you are going to put in the OEM folder.

Step2:

Make 2 folders "PACKAGE_Kovsky_FMRadioPanel" and "PACKAGE_Kovsky_FMRadioPanel_0409" in the OEM folder. Put your cab file in the first folder.

And now you are good to go.

Step3:

Open KovskyKitchen.CMD and start the procedures "Step 4: Building OS "from my guide.

************************************************** ********

Default Making a Cab (installer) File
The Easy Way
Before We Begin

The information listed in this section was originally written by IABovine over at XDA in this thread. This is simply a rehosting, so that this work can be shared. Please see the original thread for any questions.
Instructions

Like most people around here I enjoy customizing my phone. Problem is that copying files and applying a bunch of Registry tweaks by hand is tedious. I've built CAB files in the past but creating the INF files is an ugly process...not for the feint of heart.

So I created a utility called QuickCab that makes creating CAB files easy. It doesn't support every possible scenario, but if what you want to do is copy files or change the registry, it works quite well. This is perfect for Themes, Ringtones, Tweaks, and Mods.

Note, this Requires the .Net Framework 3.5 which can be found here.

Changelog: 2.0
Rewrote GUI to allow for more options and fix selection errors
Fixed many button and selection errors
Added Shortcut support
Added support for Vista UAC
Added support for compressed cabs
Added ability to prevent uninstall
Removed support for Setup.dll (does anyone use this?)
Move from .Net 2.0 to .Net 3.5

Click here to download the Quick Cab 2.0
The More Technical Way
Before We Begin

This was originally posted by w411y, who states "Before I begin... all credit must go to GPCarreon[MVP] who passed his knowledge of cab creating on to lucky old me" in this original thread over at modaco. Below is a rehosting of this thread; nothing has been changed. Please, visit the original thread if you have further questions.
What this Tutorial is All About

.cab files are installer files. The can install graphics, registry edits and what-have-you and make installing a theme easy (also allows for easy un-installing too!) Below explains the different parts that comprise a .cab file and how to make one. Take the time to read each section completely. (Note: this is basically explaining how to use this previously listed cab making application.
Instructions: Making the .inf (your edits)
Before beginning, click here to download your "Cab Creating Tools". Unzip it and place on your desktop of your computer.
Now you got to create an inf file which tells the cab what to do. This is simply a wordedit (or equivalent) file that is eventuall saved as .inf
Click here for a blank example you can use to follow along with the below instructions. Simply extract the zip to get the inf.
So lets look at the one for my Homer Screen (found here at w411y's site-- note: this example is not speciifcally for the Shadow, but the theory behind cab making is all the same.:

Code [Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"
CESignature="$Windows CE$"
Provider="w411y"

[CEStrings]
Appname="w411y-HomerSimpsonWM5"

[CEDevice]
ProcessorType=0

Everything under [Version] is simple enough. Just change the 'Provider'
[CE Strings] is what will be said when asked to install. So when running it will say "Do you want to install w411y - HomerSimpson?" and of course you click YES.

Code [SourceDisksNames]
1=,Source1,,"Homer"
2=,Source2,,"Sounds"
3=,Source3,,"WMP Skin"

[Source Disk Names] ... these are the names of folders in the Cab Creating Tools folder. So in the folder you just downloaded (including cabwizSP etc" there are also folders named 'Homer' which includes the images and XML. A folder for 'Sounds' and for files to do with the 'WMP Skin'

Code [SourceDisksFiles]
"w411y-HomerSimpson.home.xml"=1
"HomerSimpson-Background.jpg"=1
"HomerSimpson-Message.jpg"=1
"HomerSimpson-Profile.jpg"=1
"HomerSimpson-Error.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Warning.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Info.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Question.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Volume.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Menu.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Startup1.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Startup2.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Shutdown1.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Shutdown2.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Multimedia.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-Background(Non Orange).jpg"=1
"w411y-HomerSimpson(Non Orange Phones).home.xml"=1
"HomerSimpson-Banner.gif"=1
"HomerSimpson-CanIGoNow.wav"=2
"HomerSimpson-Fail.wav"=2
"HomerSimpson-MailIsHere.wav"=2
"HomerSimpson-Squeel.wav"=2
"The Simpsons Theme Tune.wav"=2
"HomerBackground.jpg"=3
"HomerDisabled.jpg"=3
"HomerPushed.jpg"=3
"HomerWMP.skn"=3

[Source Disc Files] ... here you list all the files involved in the cab and then give them a number. (as later on in the inf you will say Copy all files = 1 to the following folder...")

Code [CopyFiles1]
"w411y-HomerSimpson.home.xml"
"HomerSimpson-Background.jpg"
"HomerSimpson-Message.jpg"
"HomerSimpson-Profile.jpg"
"HomerSimpson-Error.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Warning.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Info.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Question.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Volume.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Menu.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Startup1.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Startup2.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Shutdown1.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Shutdown2.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Multimedia.gif"
"HomerSimpson-Background(Non Orange).jpg"
"w411y-HomerSimpson(Non Orange Phones).home.xml"
"HomerSimpson-Banner.gif"

[CopyFiles2]
"HomerSimpson-CanIGoNow.wav"
"HomerSimpson-Fail.wav"
"HomerSimpson-MailIsHere.wav"
"HomerSimpson-Squeel.wav"
"The Simpsons Theme Tune.wav"

[CopyFiles3]
"HomerBackground.jpg"
"HomerDisabled.jpg"
"HomerPushed.jpg"
"HomerWMP.skn"

[CopyFiles1] ... these are all the files that are =1 (Same applies for [CopyFiles2] and [CopyFiles3])

Code [DestinationDirs]
CopyFiles1=0,"\Application Data\Home"
CopyFiles2=0,"\Application Data\Sounds"
CopyFiles3=0,"\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player"

[DestinationDirs] ... these are where your files are copied. So [CopyFiles1] will end up in "Application Data\Home"

Code [RegData]
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen, CarrierBitmap,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Startup1.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen, CarrierShutdownBitmap,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Shutdown2.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen, MSBitmap,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Startup2.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen, MSShutdownBitmap,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Shutdown1.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:ErrorBox, BKBitmapFile,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Error.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:ExclamationBox, BKBitmapFile,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Warning.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:InformationBox, BKBitmapFile,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Info.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:QuestionBox, BKBitmapFile,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Question.gif
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:VolDlg, BKBitmapFile,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Volume.gif
HKCU,ControlPanel\Sounds\Shutdown, Sound,, \Application Data\Sounds\HomerSimpson-CanIGoNow.wav
HKCU,ControlPanel\Sounds\SystemStart, Script,, ap
HKLM,Software\HTC\Album, AudioBK,, \Application Data\Home\HomerSimpson-Multimedia.gif

[RegData] ... these are the Reg tweaks I am including (for system screens)

Code [DefaultInstall]
CopyFiles=CopyFiles1, CopyFiles2, CopyFiles3
AddReg=RegData

[Default Install] .. this is what the cab does. So it will put the files from 'CopyFiles1/2/3' into their chosen 'DestinationDirs' and will apply the 'RegData'
Instructions: Finalizing the inf file
Now save the file (from Notepad or your chosen text editor) as *.inf and make sure file type is set to 'all files'
Now drag your .inf file onto CabWizSP in the Cab Creating Tools folder and your Cab should appearin the folder. And that's it.
Final Words
One word of warning.... the paths on WM5 are different to WM2003... ie there is no Storage part to the WM5 OS
Fingers crossed this will get pinned so that everyone can see and none of you have an excuse as to why you havn't included extra screens in your homescreens wink.gif
More info here...http://www.gpcarreon.com/?p=93
Hope this helps. Good luck!!!
