for AT&T users in the US
Hi all,
I just picked up my European unlocked X1 (Vodafone branded) and my carrier in the US is AT&T.
Out of the box the phone's web browsing is set-up for use with Vodafone. This does NOT mean it is locked to it. Steps involved for browsing the web using AT&T's 3g network/Edge:
1) contact AT&T and give them the IMIE number associated with your phone and make sure you have a suitable data plan, I got the $30 unlimited plan
2) on the phone choose Start-->setting-->connection-->connections (again). choose ADVANCED-->Select Network-->New. Here you can name it something appropriate, i.e. AT&T Web. then click on the MODEM tab. Again, name this something appropriate, then for "select modem" drop down list choose "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G), click on Next and type in wap.cingular (this should all be lower case) under APN. click NEXT, and leave these fields empty (AT&T no longer uses username and passwords with the APN system). Click FINISH and that should do it

You can get a $15 unlimited plan if you have a cheap flip phone as well:
1) Remove the data plan from your line.
2) Put the sim card in your cheapo phone.
3) Wait about 15-30 minutes, and go to your account management page on Cell Phones and cell phone plans - | Wireless from AT&T, formerly Cingular
4) Go to "Manage Features" and choose Media Net (or Media Max if you want unlimited SMS with it, but that's like $15 more)
5) Save.
6) Put your sim back in your Xperia, and voila. You have the exact same speeds as the $30 plan, but for half the cost.

But how would that work if you have given AT&T the IMIE number of the X1? I read somewhere that the medianet with the non-smartphones does not have full web access, such as youtube site, etc. but not sure about.

Oh, why did you give them the IMEI? I just swapped out my sim card when I upgraded from my ghettophone to a Blackjack II, and again when I got my Xperia. It may still work, though.
But no, the data plans are all the same. They're targeted at different phones, though. The "limited access" thing is AT&T selling it by default on phones with stripped down browsers that don't allow arbitrary urls.

hmm, im not sure. Maybe they've changed things but from the last time i checked, the $30 plan includes full web browsing, while the $15 was for media net, and i thought media net was the cheap browsing capabilities.
But then... when ever i picked up my Vu from ATT the clerk said I could get internet for $15... so im not sure. Someone would have to call and figure what the difference is between Media and the $30.

I've been able to do full browsing on a Fuze, Blackjack II, and on my Xperia X1i, and I'm able to get 3G connections pretty much everywhere but my house.
It's literally the exact same connection. The whole "limited web browsing" thing is that you're unable to actually select the plan without having a phone available that has a stripped down browser.
