Thread: Best UK carrier for X1 as modem and Remote Desktop client

With a keyboard and 800x480 screen, the X1 should be a fantastic remote desktop client.

The main reason I'm after a windows smartphone is the possibility of using Remote Desktop to log in to windows servers & PCs to to emergency remote management of them. Some carriers seem to block Remote Desktop, either by not including it on the phone (since WM6 it's become optional) or by blocking port 3389 (the default TCP/IP port for RDP connections).

Can anyone recommend me a UK carrier & tarriff that doesn't block Remote Desktop, and also allows me to use the X1 as a 3G modem for a laptop via bluetooth or USB? I need a generous data plan, and about 600 minutes.

Unfortunately, the only provider that will suit you is T-Mobile. I've been on T-Mobile for the last 18 months on a HTC TyTN, and used it for remote desktop and as a modem for my laptop. You need to upgrade to 'Web&Walk Plus' which gives you 3Gb per month allowance.

To get the Xperia at any kind of sensible price, I've had to move away from T-Mobile. I've changed to Vodafone, with only 500Mb data allowance for the phone, but I've got a 5Gb data card from 3 for my laptop, so I won't use the phone as a modem. If you're determined to use the device as a modem, you could try Expansys for some deals on T-mobile.
